Which One Should You Choose?
We've all grown up hearing stories of ragi malt being foisted upon us by our grandmothers before sending us to school or our mothers adding it to hot milk because "It helps in bone growth." And indeed, finger millet too has had a similar background in the Indian household; something unremarkable yet extremely helpful. But of late, there has been another product added to the shelves beside ragi malt. Sprouted Ragi Choco Malt, made from the same grain, yet a completely different product. Here's how they compare.

Ragi Malt – The Classic One
Pretty straightforward, really. The ragi grain is roasted and reduced to a fine powder form, added to milk or water. Simple, that's all. You end up with a concoction full of calcium, iron, and fibre content, hence explaining why it's been in use for decades; it gets the job done. Flavoured rather earthy and nutty, this beverage is definitely not sweet and has never been questioned in its nutritive value.
Sprouted Ragi Choco Malt, the upgrade nobody knew they needed
This one does something a little different before it's even turned into powder — the grains are sprouted first. That single step matters more than it sounds like it should. Sprouting wakes up enzymes inside the grain that help your body actually absorb the iron and calcium instead of letting most of it pass through unused. So you're getting more out of the same grain, basically. Then there's the taste — cocoa gets blended in, so instead of that earthy flavour, you get something closer to a chocolate milk. Which, let's be honest, is a much easier sell to a kid who's already suspicious of anything green or "healthy."
Where they really differ?
If we're being fair, the sprouted version wins slightly on nutrition, purely because your body can absorb more of it. Taste is where the real gap shows up — one's traditional and earthy, the other's rich and chocolatey. And that pretty much decides who each one is for. Ragi malt suits people who don't mind the old-school taste. Choco malt is for kids, sweet-tooth adults, or anyone who wants the benefits without the "medicine" feeling.
Bottom line
Honestly, you can't go wrong either way. Stick with ragi malt if you like things simple and familiar. Go for the sprouted Choco version if you want it to feel a bit more like a treat. At Grenera, we make both, because not everyone wants the same thing in their glass, and that's completely fair.
