by Grenera Blog on February 06, 2023

Breastfeeding Week:

World breastfeeding week is celebrated worldwide from August 1st week ( August 1 to August 7). Breastfeeding is very important for infants. It is helpful for infants growth and development. Breastmilk is safe, it contains antibodies that help to protect infants from the common illness. 2 out of 3 infants are not getting breastfed for the first 6 months. WHO and UNICEF recommend breastfeeding within the first hour of birth and working to increase the rate in the first six months by at least 50% in 2025. Breastfed women have fewer chances of getting ovarian cancer or breast cancer. It is started in 1992, and every year it is celebrated based on a theme about the healthcare system, community support, environment, human rights, etc. The subject of the earlier themes brings attention to nursing mothers or women. The purpose of this nursing week is to promote breastfeeding and bring the community together ( regular breastfeeding for infants).

Breastfeeding history:

World Health Organization(WHO), United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) were created and to support and encourage breastfeeding in the year of 1990. In1991, World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was created. The world’s first breastfeeding week started in 1992. Initially, 70 countries followed this breastfeeding. Now 170 countries were celebrated breastfeeding week. Breastfeeding week is celebrated every year from August 1st to August 7. During this breastfeeding week, there are multiple activities conducted all around the world. The activities related to supporting breastfeeding, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, good nutrition, environmental safety, etc. World breastfeeding week’s highlight is the need for consistent breastmilk for infants. Doctors advise breastfeeding their infants for at least 6 months for improving infants immunity. Step up for Breastfeeding – Educate and support is the 2022 year breastfeeding week theme. This theme aims to create awareness/safeguards in different places of nursing. It seeks to involve individuals, governments, corporates, and communities.

Breastfeeding importance:

According to World Health Organization ( WHO) report infants who are breastfed are more intellectual and reduce the common illness compared to not breastfed infants. Many mothers or women do not breastfeed their infants. Because they think it spoils their body shape, fitness, and beauty. Breastfeeding is not only beneficial for infants it also beneficial for mothers. Breastfeeding women getting a risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer is very low. World breastfeeding week highlights the right of women to breastfeed their infants anytime and anywhere. Breastmilk is a natural food for infants. Breastmilk contains a good source of nutrients, it satisfies the infants growth and nutritional needs.  Breastfeeding is very challenging and different from one to another. This world breastfeeding week, we will support nursing women to breastfeed their infants anywhere at any time. SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is the death of normal and healthy infants also. Breastfeeding infants have better brain development than not feeding one. So experts advise regular breastfeeding for their infants for better brain development and to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

When your baby sucks your breast hormones trigger to produce the milk. Breastfeeding 8 to 12 times for a new baby can maintain milk production. You can take lactation powder as per the doctor's advice. Other than that some foods, herbs, and supplements may help to increase the breastmilk supply. Here some foods are listed Garlic, Ginger, fenugreek, fennel, green vegetables, sesame seeds, moringa, shatavari, etc. Moringa oleifera helps to increase breastmilk volume in early postpartum mothers. Galactagogue is a greek word, Galacta which means milk.  Galactagogue herbs are used to increase the breast milk supply. Galactagogue herbs details are listed below: Fenugreek, Shatavari, Ashwagandha, Milk thistle, Fennel, Anise, etc. Moringa is a plant that contains essential nutrients such as calcium, iron, vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, etc. Moringa oleifera leaves increase prolactin and provides essential nutrients.
